As stated above, Mr. Saul, a wonderful article. Our heads of state continue to play a vital role in our diplomatic affairs. Soft power, indeed!

Thx. Wonderful article and a reminder that the most vocal are not the most important especially if negative. And some important info about who is our official head of state and subtlenesss of that position

Thank you for this overview and a reminder that our responsibilities as a good neighbour extend in all directions. I suspect that we have been staring south for so long, it became difficult to turn our head and look over our shoulders to the north.

I am proud that my commissioning scroll is signed by Her Excellency Mme Clarkson. During her extensive career she had significant experience with armed conflict and understood better than most how soldiers and civilians are negatively impacted by war. Most poignantly, I remember Her Excellency’s OpEd in the days after 9/11 where she explained how this was not a new form of political violence, but rather simply a revealing of the world as it is.

I suspect that, while many think only of the ceremonial aspects of the GG’s position, they don’t think about the conversations that happen over coffee at State House. Obviously those can never be revealed, but I am convinced they left a not insignificant understanding of Canada among your guests.

I look forward to Mme Arbour’s tenure during this global power shift. Her extensive experience will be well positioned to help Canadians navigate the challenges to our social fabric, and help world leaders understand the true meaning of Canada. We are blessed by history and geography for which we are beholden to no one.

No need to demur on the current state of Empire's, or colonial attitudes in the world. The term "Ugly American" was coined for good reason.

I'm not certain why it dropped out of vogue. It never did in my experience.

The current American populace seem to aspire to that description, particularly given their current choice for Emporer-in-Chief.

He certainly has no compunction in stating his desired ends as regards world-domination.

Empire's will be Empire's.

Until they fail.

This one's showing signs.

Thank you very much for this interesting and informative review. The GG has a very important rôle for our nation, always has, and by the look of it, more than ever, will have a bigger part to play as Carney continues to place us front and centre on the world stage. Please keep on reporting here about Her Excellency The Right Honourable Louise Arbour's adventures as our GG. ❤️🇨🇦
