June 6, 1944.
June 6, 1944. D-Day. Between 07:45 and 08:00 the first waves of Canadians landed on Juno Beach. One of the first regiments to leap out of their landing craft into the water was the Winnipeg Rifles – my father, a 26 year old captain, was one of them. Beside them the Regina Rifles were landing.
They were under fire in the water and on the beach. They were faced by 15 machine gun positions and 5 armed concrete casements.
381 Canadians were killed on D-Day; 574 wounded.
By the end of the day 14,000 Canadians had landed. And the Winnipeg Rifles had fought their way inland to Putot.
June 6. A very different kind of day than the one many of us enjoyed today.

Lest we forget.
