And to imagine when integrity, fearlessness, and intelligence existed as the default community & individual traits. JRS & JKG: I promise to use my time to continue to be "creatively annoying".
Excellent! John insightfully says Canada was built more on minding its own business on compassion on focus of inclusivity whereas America was built on continuous expansion-overreach. America has focused on expansion of an exclusionary model of material growth. Canadians needs to be careful. The51st state theme won't go away. Especially if J D Vance is the next president. American expansionism to Canada was enabled by the likes of Mulroney... by Canada enabling American corporatism to in fact make Canada a Vassell state of America Inc.- to make Canada too much of a 51st state since the 1960s- especially since 1980s-Neoliberalism-American hegemony ruled the day.
Monroe Doctrine and Manifest Destiny - even if Trump hasn’t heard of them he’s born to execute them. Marx’s internationalism of workers solidarity is the democracy the teach bros fear.
I agree with you: Who got us into this mess? Many are still in major gov roles. Where is room for those of us who have been wanting to help for a long time.
My goodness. I’ve been a smug as a Canadian looking at how ignorant the US is about the world. I’m ashamed to admit that I didn’t think how anemic our own international experience is given the tasks ahead of us today.
John is a true North Star… I’ve been reading his prescient works and listening to his wisdom since the early 90s. In today’s uncertainty, his ideas offer equilibrium in a world where extremes are celebrated.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, insight, and inspiration! A call to action from your first commentary about compassion as an active verb. History teaches and our present moment is the sum of its parts. I hope we live up to your calls to action.
Compassion is expensive. Principles and values have a cost. Yes we need to understand how we got into the “free trade” or more accurately integration with the US. Ma
Thank you for that John Ralston Saul! Inspiring, fierce and lively. I needed that today.
Preaching to the converted here. Thanks.

I want to listen to the speech. Where is it?
So frighteningly true. Time to prepare for "round two."
The USA has lost everything in the ENTIRE Middle East.
From the U.S. you inspired me
